What’s going on after under-graduate? To go to graduate study in direct, or to work one or several years, then go to get a graduate degree? A lot of students always like to ask themselves about those questions when they will face under-graduate. Some students want to have a graduate in directly. However, some students would like to work one or several years then to have a graduate. And I belong to the latter. Work for one or several years then go to get a graduate degree is good choice for us. Because it is not only can give us an opportunity to practice theory knowledge which gets from college, then through the practice to get some experiences and make us understand what we need. Also it can make money to pay our tuition fee for graduate study by ourselves to decrease our parents’ pressure. Like for the undergraduate students who are major in finance, there are so many job opportunities for them.
There is a chance for us to practice our theory knowledge after under-graduate which is that to work one or several years. Practice can make the nature theory knowledge become fact. And can help us to understand the knowledge in deep. Through the practice we can get some experience and make us understand what we need to improve. We will do the best when we clear our shortages. So, we will have a good performance in graduate study after we have some work experiences. And choose a correct direction during the graduate study. The important thing is that can support the development of the academic field. Because we understand that we not clear those questions and we will spend more time to learn, search and develop. But my parents insist on that go to graduate study right now after undergraduate. They thought that there is no transition from undergraduate to graduate if we choose to graduate study right now. Because we are still students that it is easy to entry a study status. And they thought that our theory knowledge is insufficient in the undergraduate, if we choose to work after undergraduate, it is hard to enter a work status and have no high improvement in work area. If we choose to graduate study right now, it can consolidate our theory knowledge and make us understand it sufficiently. Then after graduate to work, it is easy to familiar with our work. But I think if we after under-graduate and choose to go to graduate study right now, we will feel confuse what we should do and what do we want. We will keep in the unclear status for theory knowledge. Because we are not to practice it. It can’t make us understand our major in deep. And there is no much improvement in our graduate study. In opposite, it is easy for us to understand our theory knowledge if we choose to work after undergraduate. So it is not clever choice that goes to graduate study in directly after under-graduate.
To work after under-graduate then to go to graduate study not only benefits for ourselves, but also can help our parents to decrease the financial pressure. For a foreign student, the tuition fee and living expense are about $35,000 per year, this is not a small number, actually, in China this is a big number. If I study in China I just need to pay $7,000 per year, and it is expensive in China, in some college just needs pay $800 per year. Compare with $7,000 or $800, $35,000 is pressure for our parents. Especially, for a foreign student, if we have no society secure number we can’t to work during in the campus, it is illegal. So it means if we choose to have graduate study in direct after under-graduate, our parents need to pay all of those tuition fee and living fee. Eventhough, a lot of college support graduate assistantship for graduate students, but it is still need our parents to pay the remaining tuition fees. It is shame for a person whose has 22 years old and spend the money from parents. And it is pressure for both parents and ourselves.
However if we go to work one or several years after under-graduate then go to graduate study, it can help decrease the parents’ pressure and ourselves pressure. And it is legal if our foreign students get a job after under-graduate in U.S. And a lot of my friends agree with me. But our parents disagree with us. They thought to pay our tuition fees is their responsibility, and our responsibility is study hard. And some parents thought we can’t earn all of our graduate tuition fees during the work time. In their opinion, we are young guys and have no theory of money, even though we can earn money, we don’t know how to accumulate money. When we get the money we will consume it quickly. Because we are so young, we are like to buy new products and experience new life. After work one or several years we still have no enough savings to pay our tuition, it still need them to help us to pay graduate tuition fees. So they thought it is better for us to go to graduate study right now rather than to work one or several years then go to graduate study after undergraduate.
However, my friends and me insist on go to work one or several years then come back college to continue our graduate study. In our point, we will 22 years old when we undergraduate, to pay our graduate tuition is our responsibility, not our parents’. We are adults and we understand how to accumulate money, and we know the important to accumulate money because we understand we need to pay our tuition fees by ourselves. So compare with those, my friends and me would like to choose work for one or several years after undergraduate, then go to graduate study.
Compare with other majors, there are a lot of job opportunities for finance major. And in the salary side, the average wage is $4,500 per month in financial apartment, but in other apartment, the average wage is $2,000. So for us, eventhough we are undergraduate, we still can earn more money than other major undergraduate. We are not to worry about there is difficult to find a job. We are young, so sometimes we are more sensitive for economic situation and learning something very quickly. So a lot of companies prefer to employ undergraduate. But our parents’ against that even we can find job easier, but our wages is not high. They said that a lot of companies prefer to employ us because of we are undergraduate student, and they can pay less money for us. But if we are graduate students, there still have a lot of jobs waiting for us and the wages level is higher than undergraduate student. However we don’t think so. We are not care about the wages. We are care about to learn experiences through practice. And we believe the low wages is temporary, after a period time, our wages will become the same as the graduate students, even higher than the graduate students, because we are learn experience for society practice when they learn knowledge for college. We have more experience than them. In the early, maybe graduate students get the same wage as undergraduate who leave campus right now. But for the undergraduate students, because they go to work when other students go to graduate, after two years, they are almost has improvement in the company, so their wage would increase, their average wages will become $6,000 per month. So compare with this attraction, I’d like to go to work several years after undergraduate, then go to graduate study.
What shall we do after under-graduate? To work one or several years, then go to graduate study. It can make us practice our theory knowledge. And can give ourselves an opportunity to get experience before we go to graduate study. And give enough time for
ourselves to understand what do we need and what do we want. Also to help decrease our parents’ financial pressure and ourselves’ pressure. Especially, there are so many job opportunities waiting for us.
